The painter Henry Koombes, born in Mauritius in 1948, is a self-taught artist. After spending several years in South Africa, he returns to Mauritius in 1983, and in 1990 he opens a contemporary art gallery in Grand Baie, where he features many Mauritian artists. Several exhibitions have been devoted to Mauritius, La Réunion, South Africa, London and Tokyo. Since 1998, he illustrates the children’s book series entitled “The Adventures of Tikulu”, to which he gave a strong visual identity through vivid and bright colours, and well-structured, fresh and joyful designs with clearly defined contours reminiscent of the «ligne claire» technique invented by Hergé.
